“Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains unawakened” -Anatole France

This is Barkley. He is the absolute love of my life. My husband Brian’s too, but he’s accepted his position as second fiddle while Barkley continues to be a momma’s boy at heart. Barkley is a Welsh Terrier who came into our lives when he was 8 weeks old; he’ll be 14 yrs old in October. We have no 2-legged children, and neither of us have ever had a dog as adults, so needless to say, he is showered with much love and attention! He goes everywhere we can possibly bring him--has taken countless road trips with us, (to Florida twice) has a wardrobe including hand-knit Alpaca sweaters, his own Facebook page & had a Bark Mitzvah on his 13 birthday. He also did some modeling in his younger days, and actually had an agent (that is NOT a typo). He has since retired from life in the fast lane, and lives a quiet life of leisure now--as a senior dog, we’ve seen him slow down a little, but luckily not too much!

When Covid hit, Brian, Barkley and I began self-isolating in Dutchess County at a farm cottage we rented before the pandemic. Aside from recognizing how incredibly fortunate we are to have this home to escape to, one of the biggest silver linings has been the extra time we’ve been able to spend with this sweet, loving, goofy, furry best friend of ours. (For me especially, as my husband normally works from home anyway). Prior to the quarantine, I was running every day to my office, feeling like I was missing out on precious time with Barkley, who my husband would tell me walked around looking for me when I was not there. Knowing he is getting older, I wanted to soak in every minute I can with this fluffy guy. (Let’s face it-50 years would not be enough time with him)

Well on March 16th, that obviously all changed, and I cherish the gift we’ve been given. Our bond has gotten even stronger these days & I’ve been able to reaffirm that he is just THE best--he isn’t judgemental or mean, wouldn’t hurt anything. He’ s loyal, trustworthy, loves every one he sees, as well as all the animals he’s met on the farm! Just having him near is so comforting, and washes the stress and anxiety away. And boy is there is a lot of that lately. This is a very dark time for everyone, but he offers more than a bit of bright light. He has been through so much with us, and this is one more thing that he will help us get through. Just seeing his sweet face is one of my favorites parts of the day. His soul is pure, and his love is truly unconditional.

Love you forever pal, and look forward to many more adventures ahead together!
